Meet the Band
The Flip Flop Republic
Flip Flop Republic has evolved over the years, starting as a duo called the Flip Flop Boys ten years ago. Vocalists Doug Dolan and Joe Lowder wanted to hang out at the beach and play music. The first album was happy, beachy, and about enjoying gulf coast life. The debut album made top charting waves in the Trop Rock genre. Their new album, Physical Science, has those elements but shows maturity and evolution. Songs like “Lost in the Fire” and “Mockingbird” strike a more serious tone and address important issues people face today.
Flip Flop Republic has many influences. These include The Police, Sublime, Jimmy Buffett, and even Huey Lewis. A blend of rock, reggae, and pop that blends into something familiar but fresh; but the band contributes their home base of Tallahassee, FL also as a major influence. Tallahassee could be the music mecca of the South. North Florida and Tallahassee have a strong music pedigree. George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic redefined funk music. T Pain’s influence on rap and R&B is unmistakable. Creed ruled the Alt Rock era with their soaring melodies, and Ray Charles is a legend from the area. The region punches above its weight, and Flip Flop Republic is the next in line to make an impact on a genre.
Flip Flop Republic’s sound echoes modern rock and reggae, but the new album also stands out as unique. Songs like “Heart Like an Anchor” and “Break Free” mix genres of rock and R&B with a southern drawl. The band members hail from Mississippi, Miami, and St. Maarten. Their roots shine in this mashup of influences. Only in a college town like Tallahassee, could people from different backgrounds come together and create something truly original.
Flip Flop Republic threw a raucous album release party this year to give their fans a first listen of the new music. The capacity crowd and the high-energy show was followed by a strong album release. The record topped the iTunes Reggae chart at #1 and on Amazon Reggae Best Sellers at #2. The album continued the strong showing by hanging in the international/world music in the top 25 on Amazon and Apple platforms the month of release.
